Same problem here but didn't notice your post until I had recovered teh drive using Linux Mint 8. btw I usually restore all the 5 registry files.
if systemvolumeinformation wasn't enabled by windows, there's a repair folder on windows, but system would be quite old. start then in safe mode and make a scandisk on hd, probably it was improperly shutted down while registry was still open or the disk has some problems. in system.old (to make a backup) and registry_,machine_etc. There are many ways to do it, but if I were you, the easier way for me could be make a bootable USB (there are free softwares around to do it, mine is from HP site), in DOS I would go in Systemvolumeinformation folder, take a look to the rp folders, take a random folder from the newers ones (but not the least), copy registry_machine_system_or_something_like_that stored in it in the windows\system32\config folder, rename system. I FOUND THE STUFF OF ALT-F10 ON THE FIRST PAGES IN THE MANUAL, MOST PEOPLE HERE HAS SW PROBLEMS SO I REALLY CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY ARE SO EXCITED TO APPLY A DUMMY SOLUTION ANYONE COULD DO.įor damaged registry problems (windows\system32\config\system.) if you don't want to reinstall (with the dummy solution.) all the os, I suppose you need another machine to make all the stuff but at least having fat32 file system you should do it without many problems.
